The English list uses the English Speller Database (SCOWL) by Kevin Atkinson. Copyright 2000–2026 by Kevin Atkinson. We select game-length words, remove excluded classes such as names and abbreviations, normalize spellings, and compile the result for WordBuzz. The complete source copyright and permission notice is included here.
The expanded English list also contains words from the UK Advanced Cryptics Dictionary. Copyright (c) J Ross Beresford 1993-1999. All Rights Reserved. Its complete notice is reproduced verbatim in the linked source copyright document.
Some selected English entries are corroborated by the Crossword Nexus Collaborative Word List. Copyright © 2021 Crossword-Nexus. Its MIT copyright and permission notice is included. Crossword entries alone are not added to the game list.
French
The expanded French list draws on Lexique Sérénimot 4.00.5, derived in part from Lexique 4.00 by Boris New and Christophe Pallier. These sources are provided under Creative Commons Attribution–ShareAlike 4.0. WordBuzz filters and normalizes selected entries, combines them with its existing dictionary, and offers the adapted French word list under the same licence. The source authors do not endorse WordBuzz.
German
The expanded German list draws on the German word list for Tanglet and other word games by enz, published under CC0 1.0. WordBuzz filters and normalizes selected entries before combining them with its existing dictionary.
Other dictionary sources
French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Russian also draw on English Wiktionary contributor data, extracted by Kaikki.org under Creative Commons Attribution–ShareAlike 4.0. WordBuzz removes names, abbreviations, symbols and unsupported spellings; checks inflected forms; adds required campaign words; and compiles each list for the game. The adapted lists are available under the same licence. Wiktionary and Kaikki.org do not endorse WordBuzz.

These ZIP archives contain readable, one-word-per-line UTF-8 files used to build WordBuzz dictionaries, with their notices and licences. The baseline files are used by the current calibration campaign. The expanded English, French and German files contain additions being calibrated for a later app release. Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Russian are unchanged by that expansion. The adapted French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Russian lists are offered under Creative Commons Attribution–ShareAlike 4.0; the English list follows the SCOWL terms linked above.
